A medium to large size native oak with dark green leaves in summer turning yellow-orange to orangish-brown in fall, named because of the resemblance of the leaves to the Allegheny chinquapin. It does not have lobed leaves like most other oaks; its leaves are toothed like a chestnut. It can grow on rocky slopes, adapting to many different soil types. This magnificent tree can live up to 100 years.
