The “Big Red” mayhaw is an improved variety known for producing large fruit, with sizes ranging up to 1 inch in diameter. The mayhaw grows best in moist, well-drained acidic soils along riverbanks, ponds, swamps. It needs part to full sun. The red fruit is used for jellies, preserves and wine. It is also used to attract and feed deer and other wildlife. It can be grown as a large shrub or a tree, depending on how it is pruned. This variety is one of the largest and blooms later than others.
